เอกอัครราชทูตออสเตรเลียประจำประเทศไทย เจมส์ ไวส์ ได้มอบทุนการศึกษา Endeavour Awards  ให้แก่ผู้ได้รับทุนทั้ง 16 คนจากประเทศไทย พร้อมทั้งเปิดตัวหนังสือ “Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia” ซึ่งมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับ 60 ปีของทุนการศึกษาออสเตรเลียสำหรับภูมิภาคเอเชียใต้และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้อย่างเป็นทางการ ในงานที่จัดที่โรงแรมดุสิตธานีเมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้

            ตั้งแต่มีการริเริ่มทุนโคลัมโบเมื่อกว่า 60 ปีที่แล้ว การศึกษาได้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการสานสัมพันธ์อันแน่นแฟ้นระหว่างออสเตรเลียกับประเทศต่าง ๆ ในภูมิภาคนี้ รวมทั้งประเทศไทย ปัจจุบัน รัฐบาลออสเตรเลียได้มอบทุนการศึกษา Endeavour Awards  ซึ่งเป็นทุนที่มีการแข่งขันสูงในระดับนานาชาติ และมีการคัดเลือกผู้ได้รับทุน โดยพิจารณาจากความรู้ความสามารถที่เหมาะสม

              ทุนการศึกษา Endeavour Awards เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้มีความรู้และเชี่ยวชาญจากหลากหลายสาขาทั่วโลก ไปศึกษา ทำงานวิจัย และพัฒนาความสามารถทางวิชาชีพ ณ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย  นอกจากนี้ยังเปิดโอกาสให้ชาวออสเตรเลียเดินทางไปศึกษาต่อในต่างประเทศด้วยเช่นกัน

            ทุนการศึกษา Endeavour Awards มีหลายประเภท ไม่ว่าจะเป็นทุนระดับสูงกว่าปริญญาตรี ทุนเพื่อการวิจัย ทุนระดับอาชีวศึกษาและการฝึกอบรม รวมถึงทุนสำหรับผู้บริหารเพื่อการพัฒนาระดับวิชาชีพ  โดยไม่จำกัดสาขาวิชา

           เจมส์ ไวส์ เอกอัครราชทูตออสเตรเลียประจำประเทศไทย กล่าวว่า  “ทุนการศึกษา Endeavour Awards ช่วยให้เกิดการถ่ายทอดแบ่งปันความรู้ และส่งเสริมความเข้าใจระหว่างผู้ที่ได้รับทุนชาวไทยและชาวออสเตรเลีย รวมทั้งเป็นการสร้างเครือข่ายระหว่างประเทศของผู้ได้รับทุนจากทั่วโลกที่จะดำเนินไปอย่างต่อเนื่องแม้ว่าพวกเขาจะกลับมายังประเทศไทยแล้วก็ตาม  ซึ่งทำให้สายสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศของเราทั้งสองแน่นแฟ้นยิ่งขึ้น”

          ผู้ได้รับทุนการศึกษา  Endeavour Awards เป็นผู้มีความรู้และความเชี่ยวชาญจากหลากหลายสาขา และจะไปศึกษาในโครงการที่แตกต่างกันไป รายละเอียดข้างล่างนี้เป็นตัวอย่างของผู้ได้รับทุนการศึกษา  Endeavour Awards ประจำปี 2554 ในประเภทต่าง ๆ

           ทุนวิจัยในระดับสูงกว่าปริญญาเอก Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Awards

คุณสุภิญญา ปัญญาสีห์ อาจารย์ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง จังหวัดเชียงราย ได้รับทุนวิจัยในระดับสูงกว่าปริญญาเอกด้านการสอนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาที่สองที่มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยี ซิดนีย์ โดยจะวิจัยเรื่องการสอนภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียนรูปแบบต่าง ๆ สามแบบ ได้แก่  โรงเรียน สถาบันสอนภาษา และชั้นเรียนสำหรับผู้อพยพวัยผู้ใหญ่

“ออสเตรเลียเป็นประเทศที่มีผู้นิยมมากที่สุดเป็นลำดับต้น ๆ ในด้านการศึกษาต่อระดับนานาชาติ โดยเฉพาะการเรียนภาษาและการเรียนในมหาวิทยาลัย  ดังนั้น ออสเตรเลียจึงเป็นสถานที่ที่เหมาะสมเป็นอย่างยิ่งสำหรับงานวิจัยของดิฉัน นอกจากนี้ ดิฉันยังมั่นใจว่าจะได้รับการสนับสนุนด้านการศึกษาที่มีคุณภาพสูงด้วย”

           ทุนการศึกษาระดับสูงกว่าปริญญาตรี Endeavour Postgraduate Awards

           คุณศิรัญญา หรูวรรธนะ  ที่ปรึกษากฎหมายของบริษัทที่ปรึกษากฎหมายและภาษีอากรไพร้ซวอเตอร์เฮาส์คูเปอร์ส จำกัด    จะไปศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาโทด้านกฎหมายที่มหาวิทยาลัยเมลเบิร์น คุณศิรัญญามีความสนใจพิเศษด้านกฎหมายธุรกิจระหว่างประเทศและการระงับข้อพิพาททางเลือก

           “ดิฉันเชื่อมั่นว่าการได้ศึกษากับผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านกฎหมายชั้นนำของโลกในประเทศออสเตรเลีย จะทำให้ได้รับความรู้อย่างลึกซึ้งและประสบการณ์อย่างกว้างขวาง ซึ่งเป็นแนวทางสำคัญที่ช่วยให้ดิฉันสามารถเชื่อมโยงทฤษฎีทางนิติศาสตร์เข้ากับหลักยุทธศาสตร์ในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริง”

            ทุนการศึกษาระดับอาชีวศึกษาและการฝึกอบรม Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Awards

             คุณเบญจรัตน์ แสงสุริยัน คุณครูสอนศิลปะเด็กของโรงเรียนอู่ทิพย์ และโรงเรียนคูลคิดส์  จะไปศึกษาในระดับอนุปริญญาด้านการดูแลเด็กเล็กที่สถาบันการศึกษาปฐมวัยแห่งออสเตรเลีย (Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies -AIECS)  ที่รัฐควีนส์แลนด์

            “ในฐานะนักศึกษาของสถาบัน AIECS  ดิฉันจะมีโอกาสได้ศึกษาและฝึกงานจริงที่ศูนย์ดูแลเด็กเล็กในรัฐควีนส์แลนด์ ทุนการศึกษา Endeavour VET Awards นี้ยังเปิดโอกาสให้ดิฉันเข้ารับการอบรมภาษาอังกฤษก่อนเริ่มเรียนในระดับอนุปริญญา ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นทุนการศึกษาที่น่าสนใจ และแตกต่างจากทุนอื่น ๆ อย่างแท้จริง”

            ทุนการศึกษาระดับผู้บริหารเพื่อการพัฒนาระดับวิชาชีพ Endeavour Executive Awards

            คุณอรอุมา แก้วกล้า  อาจารย์ประจำภาควิชาชีววิทยา คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหาสารคาม จะไปทำงานวิจัยที่มหาวิทยาลัยฟลินเดอร์ส รัฐเซาท์ ออสเตรเลีย ทางด้านเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพการเกษตรเพื่อพัฒนาผลผลิต “ทุนการศึกษานี้จะเปิดโอกาสให้ดิฉันได้พัฒนาความสามารถทางวิชาชีพในหลากหลายด้าน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความรู้ด้านระเบียบวิธีวิจัย การบริหารงานวิจัย วิธีการสอนที่มีนวัตกรรม และการออกแบบหลักสูตร สิ่งเหล่านี้จะช่วยทำให้บรรลุเป้าหมายของการวิจัยเพื่อพัฒนาแบบแผนการเกษตรของประเทศไทยให้มีความยั่งยืนมากขึ้นในอนาคต”

 หนังสือ Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia

 หนังสือ “Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อเฉลิมฉลองความสัมพันธ์ทางการศึกษาระหว่างออสเตรเลียกับประเทศเพื่อนบ้านในภูมิภาค โดยตั้งแต่ทศวรรษที่ 50 เป็นต้นมา นักศึกษาหลายพันคนจากเอเชียใต้และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ได้ไปศึกษาต่อที่มหาวิทยาลัยและสถาบันการศึกษาต่าง ๆ ในออสเตรเลียด้วยทุนการศึกษาของรัฐบาล หนังสือเล่มนี้ ได้บอกเล่าถึงกิจกรรมทางการศึกษาในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโอกาสทางการศึกษาต่อในออสเตรเลีย ไปจนถึงการแลกเปลี่ยนบุคคลากรและนักศึกษา โครงการโรงเรียนพี่โรงเรียนน้อง และโครงการวิจัยต่าง ๆ ร่วมกัน ซึ่งได้ช่วยเน้นย้ำให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ที่กว้างขวางและลึกซึ้ง ตลอดจนความสำเร็จของศิษย์เก่าจำนวนหลายท่าน

           หนังสือเล่มนี้ได้รวบรวมประวัติของศิษย์เก่าออสเตรเลียที่นอกจากจะมีชื่อเสียงและได้มีบทบาทสำคัญต่อประเทศของพวกเขาเอง ยังได้มีส่วนสำคัญในการส่งเสริมความเข้าใจอันดีระหว่างออสเตรเลียและภูมิภาคต่าง ๆ  โดยในหนังสือเล่มนี้ ได้รวบรวมประวัติของ ศิษย์เก่าชาวไทยที่เคยศึกษาต่อยังออสเตรเลียทั้งหมด 7 ท่าน ได้แก่ ดร.มีชัย  วีระไวทยะ ดร.ณรงค์ชัย อัครเศรณี นายวิทวัส สุนทรวิเนตร์  ดร.สาลินี อันตรเสน  น.ส.ศรีอนันต์ วรรณเสน  และ น.ส.พรสกล ปาณิกบุตร

Australian Ambassador congratulates Thai recipients of Endeavour Awards 2011 and launches a book on 60 years of Australian scholarship

Australian Ambassador to Thailand, James Wise, today presented Endeavour Awards to 16 high-achieving scholars and professionals from Thailand.  He also officially launched “Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia”.          

Dating back to the commencement of the Colombo Plan more than sixty years ago, education has been an enduring feature of many of Australia’s regional relationships, including with Thailand.

Currently, the Australian Government offers Endeavour Awards, which are internationally-competitive, merit-based scholarships. 

The Awards bring high-achieving students, researchers and professionals from around the world to Australia for study, research or professional development in a broad range of disciplines.  The program also provides opportunities for Australians to do the same abroad.

The scholarships cover postgraduate, undergraduate, vocational and technical courses, as well as research and professional development. They are open to all fields of study.

“The Endeavour Awards facilitate the sharing of knowledge, strengthen mutual understanding between Thai and Australian scholars and build international networks, which continue long after the scholars have returned to Thailand. This leads to strong and enduring ties between our two countries,” said Ambassador James Wise.

Endeavour Award recipients come from diverse backgrounds and undertake a wide range of projects.  Following are details of some of the 2011 Endeavour Awards recipients, who have received awards in different categories:

Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Awards (Postdoctoral Research)

Suphinya Panyasi, a lecturer at Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai, will conduct postdoctoral research at the University of Technology, Sydney, on the teaching of ESL (English as a Second Language) in three different settings; schools, language centres and in Adult Migrant English Program classes.

“Australia is one of the most popular destinations for international education, especially in language courses and higher education. Therefore, it can provide a perfect setting for research as well as high quality support for my study.”

Endeavour Postgraduate Awards

Siranya Rhuvattana, a legal consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers Tax and Legal Consultants Co., Ltd., is to undertake a Master of Laws Program at the University of Melbourne.  She has a particular interest in the area of International Business Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

“Studying with world-class legal experts in Australia, I believe that they would pass on their in-depth knowledge from their extensive experience and the necessary guidance to allow me to connect legal theory to real-world strategies.”

Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Awards

Benjarat Sangsuriyan is an art teacher for young learners at U-thip School and Koolkids School.  She will undertake a Diploma of Children’s Services at the Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies (AIECS) in Queensland.

“As a student at AIECS, I will have an opportunity to be placed in a Queensland childcare services centre in its volunteer practicum placement.  The Endeavour VET Award also provides an opportunity for me to take an English language training course before my diploma program.  This scholarship is truly interesting and different from the others.”

Endeavour Executive Awards (Professional Development)

Onuma Kaewkla is a lecturer at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Mahasarakham University.  She will conduct research at Flinders University in South Australia relating to agricultural biotechnology to improve crop yields.

“The award will provide me with professional development in several ways including by gaining knowledge on research methodologies, research management, innovative teaching methodologies and curriculum design. These will assist to fulfil the aim of my research, to improve agricultural patterns in Thailand to be more sustainable in the future.”

Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia

The “Endeavours of Excellence – 60 Years of Scholarship in South and South East Asia” celebrates the education ties between Australia and its neighbours.  Since the 1950s, thousands of South and South East Asian students have studied in Australian universities and other education institutes under government scholarships.  From pursuing education opportunities in Australia, through to shared endeavours such as staff and student exchanges, sister schools and joint research projects, Endeavours of Excellence – over 60 years of scholarship in South and South East Asia, highlights the breadth and depth of the relationship and the achievements of many.

The book presents profiles of distinguished alumni who have made a huge impact in their countries of origin and contributed significantly to greater understanding between Australia and the regions.  The book features seven Thai Australian alumni: Dr Mechai Viravaidya; Dr Narongchai Akrasanee; Mr Wittawat Soontornvinate; Ms Visootha (Nikki) Lohitnavy; Dr Salinee Antarasena; Ms Sri-anant Wanasen; and Ms Pornsakol Panikabutara.
